Bestimmte und unbestimmte Artikel

Learn genders of nouns and how definite and indefinite articles change in Nominative and Accusative cases.

German nouns have three genders and change their article based on the case.

Nominative Case (Subject)

der Mann (the man, masculine)
die Frau (the woman, feminine)
das Kind (the child, neuter)
die Kinder (the children, plural)

Accusative Case (Direct Object)

den Mann (the man, masculine changes!)
die Frau (the woman, feminine remains)
das Kind (the child, neuter remains)
die Kinder (the children, plural remains)

Example Contexts

Der Apfel ist lecker. (The apple is delicious. - Nominative)
Ich esse den Apfel. (I eat the apple. - Accusative)
Die Frau liest das Buch. (The woman reads the book.)
