Negation mit "nicht" und "kein"

Master the differences between negating nouns with kein and negating verbs, adjectives, or full sentences with nicht.

To make a German sentence negative, we use either "nicht" (not) or "kein" (no/none).

Using "kein"

kein Mann (no man)
keine Frau (no woman)
kein Kind (no child)
keine Kinder (no children)

Using "nicht"

nicht gut (not good)
nicht schlafen (not sleeping)
nicht mein Buch (not my book)

Example Contexts

Ich habe kein Auto. (I have no car.)
Das Wasser ist nicht kalt. (The water is not cold.)
Ich schlafe nicht. (I am not sleeping.)
