German A2 Lesson
Der Dativ (Indirect Objects)
Understand how the Dative case works for indirect objects, changing articles and pronouns.
The Dative case is used for the indirect object – the receiver of an action.
Article Changes in Dative
* der (m) -> dem / einem
* die (f) -> der / einer
* das (n) -> dem / einem
* die (pl) -> den / -en (Add an '-n' to the plural noun!)
Example:
Ich gebe dem Mann den Apfel. (I give the man the apple.)
Here, the man receives the apple. He is the indirect object (Dative). The apple is the direct object (Accusative).
Dative Personal Pronouns
* ich -> mir
* du -> dir
* er/es -> ihm
* sie -> ihr
* wir -> uns
* ihr -> euch
* sie/Sie -> ihnen / Ihnen
Kannst du mir helfen? (Can you help me?)
